Behind us

Invited to explore the discipline of archaeology and to adopt its methods, the pupils worked throughout the school year in the museum's storerooms as well as in their classroom. Supervised by Francisco Tropa, for whom history and the great myths of civilizations are central to his work, they observed, selected, then drew eighteen objects from the Mucem's collections, using them to create the imaginary story of a lost society. Part of their work, which is a cross between an archaeological report and a work of poetry, is presented in the exhibition. They are accompanied by five original screenprints conceived in dialogue with the guest artist; the technique used to print them, in which layers of colour are superimposed, alludes to the different strata found in archaeological digs.
From 2018 to 2020 artists are invited to residencies at the Kunsthal Aarhus (Denmark), the Mucem, POINT Centre for Contemporary Art (Cyprus) and AIR Antwerp (Belgium) with the aim of exploring the ways in which the cultural heritage can offer new perspectives on art, culture, history and identity.
