GIONO
30 October 2019 to 17 February 2020
In
order to give substance to one of the most prolific artists of the
XXth century, practically the entirety of Giono's manuscripts
resonate in this exhibition through a great number of documents,
archived photo reports, interview files and annoted books.
Some of the documents have been borrowed from the Bibliothèque
Nationale de France, and others have been kindly lent by Le Centre
Jean Giono in Manosque. A beautiful catalogue of the
show, published with Éditions Gallimard is also available.

KHARMOHRA
Art Under Fire in Afghanistan
22 November 2019 to 1 March 2020
Since
2001, a new generation of artists has emerged in Afghanistan.
This exhibition questions the effects of this
new artistic creation, as well as the dissemination and reception
of art and culture in Afghanistan and beyond. It thus produces a
shift: rather than focusing on these Mediterranean states as
weakened targets of attacks, we see them as places
of culture and heritage. With an emphasis on news and using the
Afghan paradigm as a starting point, this exhibition will be accompanied
by Study Days and an artistic program (cinema, theater and music).
Meet the artists: On
November 21st, be the first to discover the new
exhibition at 5 pm, accompanied by the 11 Afghan artists.
A translator will be present to facilitate conversation. Cocktails
will be served at 7 pm.

BEHIND US
"Excavating Contemporary Archaeology," a European cooperation project
In
our May-June Newsletter, we presented the work created by the artist
Francisco Tropa with a class of 12- and 13-years-olds from the Collège
Louis Armand. This exhibition, Behind Us is the result of this encounter between the artist, the students, and the collections of the Mucem.
Invited to develop an interest in archaeology and to apply its
methodologies, the Marseille school
students worked both in the museum's storerooms and in
their classroom. Supervised by Francisco Tropa, who places history
and the myths of civilization at the heart of his practice, they
observed, selected and then drew 18 objects from the Mucem collections,
from which they composed the imaginary story of a lost society.
The
exhibition presents part of their works, a midpoint between poetic
creativity and a report on an archaeological dig. These are
accompanied by five original silkscreens designed in a dialogue with the
guest artist. The printing process, which superimposed colored
layers, can be read as a nod to archaeology – a process of discovering
the world "layer by layer."
